I don't want to risk getting political but you'll need some background to understand why the noises scare me so much, so I'll just lay out a few details:
>live in northern Pakistan, near the Afghan border, mountainous as fuck
>family scattered on both sides and in the summer it's common for relatives to visit each other crossing the border (technically illegally but no one cares)
>family has a traditional route that at the very border goes through caves for a day's walk
>Taliban have never found those caves and have very little presence in the specific area so it's safe in that regard
>but there are bears, leopards, wolves…
>sometimes hear people talk about lions and tigers; it's theoretically possible that some have survived and are not extinct because scientists generally don't come anywhere near the region
In the winter, it's impossible to get to the cave entrance, so like I said, more distant relatives only see each other in the summer, and some old people can't take the risk at all so it's not that uncommon to go both ways during the same summer to visit back and forth the old relatives. I've personally never felt like my life was in great danger, by that I mean having a gun pointed at me or having a bear right up close or shit like that, but a lot of people have and it's always a real threat that there could be serious injury or death from any number of things.
Maybe once every three years, we have to spend a night in the cave usually on the way back from going to see one of my mum's aunts because she always gives us a lot of shit (like statues she's made) and it slows us down. It's scary to sleep in a cave to begin with but almost every time we do, there are seriously fucking shit curdling noises. Think the roaring and grunting of a bear but idk sounding like it has overtones, like if a bear was trying to throat sing, or like the wheezing sometimes how old people sound when they struggle to breathe but much deeper. I've watched nature documentaries of Africa and I totally think it does sound like a lion, but there's a human type to it almost like words and I shit you not it's almost like Urdu and a few times myPost too long.
